I smoke quite heavily and honestly do enjoy it.
I know I really should give up as I have been smoking for a long time now and my wife & kids hate it.
What worked for you?
I just recently quit smoking completely and I'll tell you it was not easy at all. I had tried before to quit cold turkey but that just didn't work...2 or 3 weeks into it I would light up again. The gradual method worked for me. I took 6 months of gradually cutting back before I finally quit. You say you smoke quite heavily I assume that's at least a pack a day.
Here's what I did: For the first month I smoked half a pack a day at the most. The second month I cut down to 10 cigarettes a day, the following month 8 a day and so on until I was down to just two a day. Then after 3 weeks of 2 a day, I went down to one a day for 2 weeks...then one every other day for a week then just 2 cigarettes all week and then down to one, and then it just didn't even seem worth it anymore. The cravings were reduced to nothing. This is a long process but it does work and it's worth it to spend 6 or 7 months quitting and then to never smoke again versus quitting faster and then starting up again. Good luck to you. You have to really want it.

Have you been trying to help/ encourage someone close to you give up smoking ? Please share your personal experiences/stories
My dad is a smoker , and he just cant seem to give up.
Thanks in advance.
bring your Father to a hospital cancer ward after showing him all the pic's, like mentioned by others, and look for a show on like Discovery chanel about the danger of smoking, but mainly tell him how much you care and love him, and wouldn't want to experience the things that the family of people suffering from cancer go through. don't rush or force... just love
Its that time of year again when we all make resolutions.
I would dearly love to give up smoking has anyone got any sure fire tips on how i can accomplish my dream this year.
So you all realise ive been smoking for 30 years and ive had enough so please help. Many thanks and Happy New Year to all
My tip is to gradually stop, because you have been smoking for such a long time now when you stop smoking you will get very harsh withdrarwal symptoms which will make you feel really bad. So try limiting your amount each day and decrease that number by 1 or 2 cigerates a day, remember stay strong and dont give in. You CAN do it! Just beleive in yourself!
Good Luck.
Hope this helps.
On 5th day now, and I seem to be smoking more as I know the quit day (between days 8 and 15) is imminent. When will I want to give up, has anyone else had this problem?
You supposed to stop the day you wake up feeling you can.I to
have been smoking on Champix. But very little.Just finished the
last smoke about an hour ago.Told myself that's it.Willpower.
I would like to hear of different ways/tips people have had to give up smoking. Anything from patches to hypnotherapy is good.
Also tell me things that didnt work please.
I smoked for 51. yes, fifty one smelly years. Gave it up 4 years ago. Does that make me qualified to answer your question?
I tried many times in that 51 years without success. And the reason for that is - because you need a good reason to give it up.
For most people that means health problems. Unfortunately, by then it's too late.
I got away with it health wise but 4 years ago I sat down with a calculator and did some sums. By then I was working part-time outdoors in all weathers, and heading towards full retirement.
I have smoked everything you can imagine during those 51 years but 4 years ago I was smoking small cigars like cigarettes - inhaling and smoking about 40 a day.
It worked out that I was spending more money on smoking than I was earning in my part time job. All those soakings outdoors and getting colds etc just so I could smoke.
Choice - carry on getting soaked to the skin or give up smoking.
I chose to give up and take it easy.
Yep, it was hard, but I did it. No patches, no hypnosis, I just didn't put any cigars or cigarettes in my mouth anymore.
When the craving got too bad I found that stuffing 4 or 5 strong flavoured pickled onions in my mouth helped. Also a strong Bovril drink.
But I must warn you about the side effects of giving it up (and others tell me they have had the same side effects.)
After about a month you realise you've won.
You've beaten them.
You've broken free.
And when you see other people standing in a doorway of an office in the rain having a smoke you think of them as weeklings.
You are strong. You did it.
It makes you feel really, really good. You feel like a Superman.
It gives you a whole new outlook on life.
No one is going to tell you you stink or wriggle their nose up when they get too near you - you feel so very good inside yourself, and that has a knock-on effect.
Your sex life improves dramatically. You feel fitter. You want to go out dancing. You want to enjoy life. Because you have broken free from those damned handcuffs.
And if you don't believe me - try it.
It's true.
I won't say "Good luck" to you.
Because there's no luck involved.
Just hard work and the guts to see it through.
I may be an old git - but I'm a non-smoking old git!

Quit Smoking Blog: Give up smoking for the holidays? Ironically ...
There are plenty of smokers, just like you, who have a desire to quit this bad habit. When it comes time that you decide to give up smoking, there's always that element of timing. You're going on vacation next week. You're going back to school to train for a new career. You've invited guests for the weekend. You're too stressed out at your job. You know the drill. It seems that there's always some reason that makes this a bad time to try to give up smoking. While you might genuinely want to quit smoking, it's far easier to rationalize that 'this just isn't the time' and put the whole idea on the back burner. The usual result? You put it off for a 'better time'. Here we've got a novel idea that...
