I'm 19, and have only smoked for maybe a year, but my parents always smoked so I got second hand smoke form that mostly all my life.
But I'm just wondering what are the chances of actually getting lung cancer from smoking?
Pretty High, I guess. Im 18 and i have been smoking since 8th grade. I am currentyl a senior so thats about 4 years. I have had bronchitis 2 times and my doctor told me its from smoking too much. And that getting too many sicknesses from smoking can definitely lead to lung, throat, and mouth cancer. But i dont care. I still smoke but i think it would be a smart choice to quit but id rather not
Anti-smoking campaigns in Australia are getting tougher and more confronting and this latest ad is no exception. More info at www.quit.org.au

Research shows that it takes on average about 20 years to develop lung cancer from smoking. My question is, would it be possible to develop any cancer from smoking much more quickly than this, for example after only a few years or so, if you had a genetic predisposition or just plain bad luck?
Anything is possible but unlikely. Besides when they say 20 years, I think they average it out. Some people it take 30 years, other 10 years or less then they average it out so it could be shorter depend on the individual.

I know how some people are going to respond: "Well you are gonna die anyway from [xyz]; You can get cancer from breathing regular air; It feels good so I do it anyway; It's my life let me die the way I want." Are any of these responses justification for you smoking?
Its better than eating all the time, it's something that occupies you, its a social thing and it's addicting. It sucks but this is all true.
Hope that helped =)
Studies show a 20 year gap between starting smoking and developing lung cancer. My question is, what is the shortest amount of time between somebody starting smoking and developing cancer that could be reasonably attributed to a cause of the smoking?
i think its hard to say.
a 20 year old could have started smoking for 1 year...and they could have developed lung cancer and died....and they might have not even gotten the cancer because of smoking. It could just be genetics

Is Smoking Tougher on Women? - Health News - Health.com
SUNDAY, Oct. 25 (HealthDay News) — Women may be more vulnerable than men to the carcinogens and other noxious substances in cigarette smoke , a growing body of research suggests.
In one study of nearly 700 people with lung cancer , Swiss experts found that women tended to be younger when they received the diagnosis, even though they smoked less than the men who developed lung cancer.
In another study, researchers from Harvard University and the University of Bergen in Norway evaluated more than 950 men and women with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), known to be linked to smoking. The result: The women with COPD were younger when they got the diagnosis and had smoked less than the men with the respiratory ailment.
