Quitting Smoking?
CANCER in fancy COVER

Alright so, my parents are planning to attempt to quit smoking next week while my dad is on vacation from work. They attempted to quit about a month ago and let me just say it was not a pleasant expereince for any of us who had to live with them. They get so grouchy, they constantly snap on people over small things, and what's worse is they end up arguing with each other over dumb stuff as well.
My question is: Is there anything they can do/try to do that will make it easier for them to quit so they are less likely to snap on everybody who crosses their path, and less likely to argue with each other?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :-)
The last time they tried to quit they used the patch and claimed they didn't need it to help them quit, stopped using it, tried quitting without help, and ended up smoking again because my brother, grandmother, and I threatened to shove the cigarettes down their throat because we couldn't take their attitudes anymore.
I'm going to try to convince them to talk to the doctor about a prescription that one of the answers recommends. My dad has been pretty dead set that being away from the stresses (and smokers) of work, having hard candy, and doing his cadance (military PT) he'll be better this time than he was the last. Does this sound logical, or is he going to be just as bad as the last time?

Giving something up that one might very well enjoy doing is very difficult. I'm sure you knew that. What one has to do along with trying to kick any habit is to try and change all habits. For instance, Normally one wakes up, makes coffee, and smokes. Well, they can try getting up and going for a walk instead. In other words, a lifestyle change is in order. If one tries to give up such a difficult habit as smoking and continues in all their old ways...forget about it.

How long should I wait to lose weight after quitting smoking?
I can quit smoking...

I quit smoking on April 2 of this year so I have a little over two months quit now. Just wondering if anyone out there has lost weight after quitting and if so how long did you wait to "diet" after becoming smoke free? I don't want to start to cut back on food too soon and end up tempting myself into smoking. But I don't want to use my quitting smoking as an excuse to eat like a hog forever either. Oh, I'm so freakin' confused!!! Any REAL answers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Just start some exercise it will also help get your mind off smoking and help your health!
Eat healthily at same time but dont be hard on yourself cos you are exercising so you are burning off what you eat anyway!
Walking for half an hour a day will do it! I lost weight that way.
Good luck! You are doing well!

Is quitting smoking easy like the commercial says they can help you?
WHO World No Tobacco Day, May 31st

I dont smoke but I know a lot of people who do. Everyone says quitting smoking is the hardest thing you could do. I keep seeing these anti smoking commercials on tv that says if you trying to quit, we can help. Do they really make it easier for people to quit? What do they do?
do those ads really help you quit?

I don't understand personally why cigarettes are legalized. They are extremely harmful, and nictoine has been placed either second or first as the most addictive thing to quit, trading places with heroin.

Those ads you see on TV, generally work on the same principle as getting people to stop doing heroin. They generally still contain nicotine but in a smokeless form, and step down the daily dosage to minimize the negative effects that come with withdrawls, making it easier for most people to quit than doing so "Cold Turkey" (immediately quitting).

I've also talked to people who have told me that hypnosis to quit smoking did have an effect on their ability to quit. However, like other answers have stated, you really WANT to have to quit to succeed...it's not a miracle drug.

How can i lose weight after quitting smoking?
Self Portrait

I quit smoking 3 months ago and gained 25LBS. I eat half the food I did while smoking, almost completely cut out alcohol, and I play raquetball 3 times a week for over an hour each time! I can't figure it out. How did my body change that much from quitting. Any thoughts on what may help?

  • Teens Get Help to Quit Smoking - Healthy Kids and Pediatrics ...

TUESDAY, Oct. 13 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that teens are more likely to quit smoking if they receive telephone counseling to build their motivation and cognitive behavior skills.

Researchers developed a telephone-counseling program and evaluated it by recruiting 2,000 smokers who were juniors at 50 Washington state high schools.

After getting parent permission, the researchers tested the program on students at 25 of the high schools.

A year later, almost 90% of the students took part in a follow-up survey. Twenty-two percent of students said they'd stopped smoking for six months, compared to 18% of the other smokers who didn't take part in the program. The counseling program also appeared to help smokers quit for three months, one month, seven days and to extend the period of time since the student last smoked a cigarette.
