hi jennylo..
as a matter of fact did use zyban to quit... i later lost that quit however, in fact i tried most everything at one time or another..
the good news is that i did in fact something that worked for me long term.. i have been free of nicotine for over 5 years now.. because of my participation in a support group... I attend Nicotine Anonymous meetings both locally, and on line... on line voice meetings are as close as your computer.. and you are welcome to attend while still planning a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck!! there simply is no wrong way to quit..

I've never felt so weak in my entire life. I want to quit smoking so badly but every time I try I only find myself obsessing on wanting a cigarette. My roommates smoke, my friends smoke and it seems like we all want to quit but end up caving for one reason or another. Does anyone have any advice that could help me?
I understand your pain. Its all about standing up for yourself. Like high schoolers, its like giving in to peer pressure, but on yourself.
I have been addicted to many things and cigarettes were the worst. If you're a cold-turkey kind of person, try that and see how it goes. If not, bum when you are drinking alcohol ONLY (social smoker) and limit yourself to only 1 or 2 per social-smoking nites.
Here is how I did it:
1. Do NOT buy a pack of smokes. If you have them, you will smoke them. Bumming from friends and strangers constantly gets old quickly and they will eventually be annoyed.
2. Don't even think about it. The more you think about it, the more you want one. When you think of smoking one, think about how your throat feels right then, think about gross crap like mucus and phlegm and tar... ew.
3. My boyfriend helped. He quit smoking and stayed strong while the rest of us continued. Every time I would smoke he would be very, very, very upset. He is worth more to me than smoking cigarettes.
4. Buy lots of gum.
5. When you quit, realize that it will take a long, long, long time to not want one... but even then, even my 80 year old grandmother still has dreams about wanting cigarettes and she quit 20 years ago.
6. When you do quit, you will feel ill, you will feel tired and down and cranky and pissed off and crazy. This will pass. Do not give in!
7. This next one is entirely dependent on your personality.... if you like the social habit part of things, partake in the social habit part. If it is too difficult for you to stay social without wanting to bum, then don't partake. You may lose friends over it, but what kind of friends are those?
8. Sooner or later you won't feel like the only one not smoking... my group of friends quit one by one... and the last one standing outside smoking felt very alone.
You can do it! You can do anything.... trust yourself.
I really want my brother to quit smoking. He promises to quit smoking everytime we tell him to. But he still keeps on smoking especially when he is angry (like some kind getting back on us). I don't want him to compromise his health because of smoking sooner or later. Please help!
i've been voluntarily trying to quit because i thought about those tar lung pictures at different stages, and also how pathetic it is that i get out of wind when going up the stairs.
If its this bad at age 21 imagine how bad it'll be when i'm very old and weak. I don't want to have to use a walker or anything like that, i don't want to be in a nursing home watching tv.
My grandmother is 94, has stayed healthy, and is up and running in quite good shape. Maybe ask him to think about these things or show him those black lung pictures. Now, i REALLY don't want to quit but these are some motivating ideas.
its very very hard and most addictions are in the hands of that person. They can't quit until they mentally accept what is going on. You can't force them to come to their own personal realizations. But let him know how much you care about him and that is why you are bringing it up, and you don't want to see him unhealthy.
I know it is hard to quit smoking. But I am determined to help my friend quit smoking. Just wondering what is the most effective way to quit smoking? Patch?
I have heard of electric cigarette. What is that? Thank you
Chantix worked for me, it was the least stressful way.
I want to be supportive of my husband while he quits smoking. He's been a heavy smoker for seven years and he's ready to quit. He's been so excited while cutting back, making lists of all of the positive reasons for quitting. Also, he's got a perscirption for the pills that help him to quit smoking.
I hope the prescription is for Chantix. I work in the smoking cessation division of a county health department, and that stuff (on the market for just under a year) is helping hard core smokers who have smoked for as many as 65 years.
Smoking is a habit as well as a physiological, and psychological addiction. You need to be dealing with all three. Here are some of the things that have worked for my clients: positive self-talk, deep breathing, chewing on straws, or tooth picks, eating carrot sticks, celery, and pretzels instead of smoking. Taking a short walk . getting rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays once the quit date is set. Set a quit date and commit to it, taper down on your way to the quit date.
As his wife try to catch him doing something right, and compliment him on that. Be supportive and understanding. The only thing tougher to kick than nicotine is heroine. Understand that once he does quit there may be a few days of irritability. Offer some incentives of your own like a favorite dessert or dinner after X time of no cigarettes. Maybe a back or foot rub. Any relaxation techniques are good for your husband to help take the edge off.
Good luck to you both. He can do it. How do I know? I smoked 1.5 packs a day for 41 years and quit (cold turkey--ewwwwwwww don't recommend that method) 3.5 years ago.
