History of Nicotine Replacement Lozenges?

For school I have to research the history of lozenges that help people to quit smoking. The only information I have found is that the lozenge was approved by the FDA in 2002. Can anyone give me links to websites with this information?

That is a hard research project,
Losenges were around, end of story and someone decided to add nicotine to them.
No check the sites I listed.
But they do not have a fantastic history like ORS or penicillin.
But, reasearch lozenges, then research nicotine replacement.
Then find the company that put the two of them together first and the date of approval and you good to go.
I think it was pfizer or that could have been the first one to get approval.
I have more information, but think the idea was for you to do research lol
Contact me if you need anything again.

Is nicotine more lethal then arsenic?

I saw a special on the the history channel and I heard this. I'm having trouble believing it though.

It depends on what Arsenic you are talking about. There is organic As and inorganic As. If you are talking about organic As, then yes, nictotine would be more lethal than the Arsenic, however if you are talking about inorganic As, then the answer is no.

The organic As would be what is found in most seafood. If you were to have your whole blood sample tested for As levels today and then go eat some seafood tonight and have your whole blood tested again the next day, you would have a higher As level, but, it would most likely be the organic form which your body can easily deal with.

The inorganic As would be what is found in a lot of old pesticides. It is also used to treat wood and in other manufacturing processes. If you were to be exposed to a significant amount of this inorganic As, then you would be in some serious trouble. I had a patient once who bought an old farm house and while checking out the property he went into a barn. He climbed up the ladder to the loft and felt around and when his hands landed on a bag he pulled the bag closer to the loft opening so that he could see what it was without having to go all the way up there. When he did the bag tore and white powder rained all over him. It got in his eyes, mouth, throat and all over his skin. He just went back to his new home to take a shower, thinking it was no big deal. Several days later he became very ill and his As levels were so high, that his blood sample had to be diluted by a factor of 5000 just to get it within the ICP-MS's linear range. He was started on chealation therapy right away, but unfortunatley did not make it.

So maybe that will give you a good idea of just how different the two are, and see that there is no way nicotine would be more lethal than the inorganic....however it could easily be more toxic than the organic As.

How does the tobacco crop ruin land?

In history class, we learned that in early American times, tobacco was grown widely in the south.

I would like to know just how it ruined the soil. was it nicotine that made the soil unbearable for other plants?

Please respond.

During the colonial period, little care was taken to preserve the soil. Land was cleared by burning which released a lot of potassium and phosphorus nutrients into the soil. Once those nutrients were depleted along with the nitrogen in the soil, the early settlers simple cleared more land and repeated the cycle. Much later farmers began to rotate crops so they had less negative impact on the soil. And they also began to fertilize the soil with animal manure.

The soil was "ruined" by poor farming practices but if you were to check those lands now they would be very productive.

Why does Congress kowtow to Philip Morris to get anything done?

If the bill had any teeth, would Philip Morris be supporting it?...Why?..read the link.
"The currently-proposed FDA regulations may sound good to those not steeped in the tobacco industry's behavioral history or long-range strategies, but predictably, given PM's involvement in crafting it, the bill is riddled with loopholes that clearly will benefit the tobacco industry, and leave protection of public health in the dust."
"...the bill elevates the needs of tobacco companies above the need for effective and immediate action to reduce nicotine addiction."
"How does passing legislation that is in the best financial interests of the largest, smartest and most aggressive tobacco company in the U.S. serve the public health agenda?"

The tobacco industry has a powerful lobby in DC. That is how most legislation gets written and passed. Money talks!

Exactly! Alcohol is well-labeled and doesn't have near the history of across the board as tobacco does?

but still should be monitored for something other than tax monies, but Nicotine has nothing but harmful ingredients, a good many of them carcinogenic. It has ingred. that were never tested to be smoked instead of ingested. Smokers and non-smokers alike should be appalled that a deadly product with an addictive drug is in reach of young and old alike. Does anyone feel offended that our government and the tobacco industry didn't find John Q. Public special enough to insist there be inserts naming every ingredient and the effect it could cause like is done with every other drug, allergy e presciption or over-the counter, especially when they know it's a deadly product? It is made accessable and taxed. It's as if they are saying "Here, we will help you kill yourself" and "Oh by the way, we are going to make sure we make big money off of your misery and demise. If I'm not mistaken, there's a name for that behavior, it's called Attempted Murder. What is your name for it?

Alcohol and tobacco are vices of evil because these destroy the health of people. Thus, there must be proper labels on their packing to warn people about the effects of taking its ingredients. Nice to call the manufacturers as criminals for murdering thousands of users.
