I have been a chain smoker for around 3 years now and now I believe its high time to quit it...

Need your tips on how to flush out all the nicotine from my body and also make my lungs more stronger to avoid unwarranted repurcussions in the future...

Firstly, I have to disagree with your first respondent: nicotine only has a half life of 2 hours. That means that 2 hours after your inhale or ingest it, your body has already metabolised half of it and cleared it out. Within 20 minutes of your last cigarette, your body is starting to recover function better and the longer you go without cigarettes the better the benefits.

There are a few things you can do to help flush the residue of cigarettes out of your system. Tar is probably what the prior respondent was referring to in relation to not being able to get rid of it as it does build up in your lungs and is very difficult to get rid of ... I've heard of one case study where someone who foolishly mixed chlorine bleach and ammonia together then passed out from the effects coughed up all the tar they had inhaled over 30 years and cleaned their lungs out ... but they nearly killed themselves doing it and it was an accident!

Anyway back on track ... the main thing you should focus on is supporting your body to break the nicotine addiction, which is as much psychological/behavioural as physical. That means that you become addicted to the act of smoking, having something to do with your hands, as a ritual at certain times (after a meal, before bed, whatever) and that you get used to this as much as to the nicotine hit. You need to replace these habits with other, healthier habits. For instance when you feel the urge to smoke, go for a run/walk/jog instead or eat a piece of fruit. Try and replace the 'bad habit' with a 'good habit' so you are improving your life at the same time.

Research has shown that regular ingestion of fresh, raw apples reduces the risk of lung cancer. A study of 10,000 people over an unknown period of time demonstrated that lung cancer can be reduced by as much as 50 per cent.

Apples can also be of great benefit to those who are trying to stop smoking. The pectin in a fresh, raw apple contains chemicals that fool the body into thinking it is getting a dose of nicotine.

Drinking a glass of water is also a good thing to do as your body needs to be well hydrated in order to function well.

High doses of Vitamin C (as much as 10 g a day) has also been shown to help reduce the severity and duration of cigarette cravings during the first few weeks of quitting. If you get the suckable kind, you are giving your mouth something to do as well to help it forget about sucking on ciggies.

I would suggest drinking lots of water and taking two 500 mg tablets of vitamin C with each meal for a few days, then cut back gradually. Smoking destroys Vitamin C in the body, so taking a lot of it will help repair the damage that smoking did to you.

Nobody will tell you it is easy, but you really must stay off tobacco. Good luck!

DEEP BREATHING. PERHAPS THE SINGLE MOST POWERFUL AND IMPORTANT TECHNIQUE

Every time you want a cigarette, do the following. Do it three times.

Inhale the deepest lung-full of air you can, and then, very slowly, exhale. Purse your lips so that the air must come out slowly.

As you exhale, close your eyes, and let your chin gradually sink over onto your chest. Visualize all the tension leaving your body, slowly draining out of your fingers and toes, just flowing on out.

This is a variation of an ancient yoga technique from India, and is VERY centering and relaxing. If you practice this, you'll be able to use it for any future stressful situation you find yourself in. And it will be your greatest weapon during the strong cravings sure to assault you over the first few days.

This deep breathing technique will be a vital help to you. Reread this point now, and as you do, try it for the first time. Inhale and exhale three times. See for yourself!


The first few days, drink LOTS of water and fluids to help flush out the nicotine and other poisons from your body.

A simpler way to go is bottled cinnamon sticks, available at any supermarket. I used these every time I quit, and they really helped me. I would chew on them, inhale air through them, and handle them like cigarettes. After a while, they would get pretty chewed up on one end -- but I'd laugh, reverse them and chew on the other end. Others may prefer to start a fresh stick. Once someone asked me, "Excuse me, but is that an exploded firecracker in your mouth?" I replied that I was quitting smoking – and they smiled and became supportive. Luckily, I never needed the cinnamon sticks after the first three days of being a nonsmoker.


Go to a gym, sit in the steam, exercise. Change your normal routine – take time to walk or even jog around the block or in a local park.


Look in the yellow pages under Yoga, and take a class – they're GREAT! Get a one hour massage, take a long bath -- pamper yourself.


Ask for support from coworkers, friends and family members. Ask for their tolerance. Let them know you're quitting, and that you might be edgy or grumpy for a few days. If you don't ask for support, you certainly won't get any. If you do, you'll be surprised how much it can help. Take a chance -- try it and see!


Ask friends and family members not to smoke in your presence. Don't be afraid to ask. This is more important than you may realize.


On your quit day, hide all ashtrays and destroy all your cigarettes, preferably with water, so no part of them is smokeable.

ive had far too much and it feels like ive had hundreds of cups of coffee. the only things i can think of are, drinking loads of water, vit c, um, i dont know, maybe if i tried to "neutralise" it somehow?? any ideas?
NO i mean nicotine, in cigarettes. large doses nicotine can cause anxiety, and even make you feel like you are having convulsions, like if youve had too much caffeine, well thats its effect on me anyway.
