Blood Testing

Last Friday I went to my physician and had a blood draw for testing the level of a certain medicine. I arrived after the lab that picks up blood tests left. That means that my vial of blood will be sitting in the closed clinic till Mondays' pickup which is done daily. If anybody from a lab answers, my question is, will my sample of unrefridgerated or unfrozen blood be testable or if it was refridgerated will it still be good for testing? What would be the proper procedure for a situation such as this?

Do not be worry, your blood will be good for testing during 72 hours.

If you had HIV would there always be a increase in your white blood cells or any detection in your general blood tests? Iam interested in thi as iam studying sexual health and this is a part of coursework, cheers guys xx

No. Most of the time HIV is not detected in the general blood tests and has to be checked for by specific testing such as ELISA. In some cases however, HIV can cause:
- An increase in white blood cells early in the disease
- A decrease in white blood cells very late in the disease

When you take a blood test, what do you recommend taking? I know that it varies from person to person, but what are the ones that we should be testing for? Cholesterol? Diabetes? Cancer? What do you recommend, for those of you who know what I'm talking about. Thanks!

Doctor will take your age and physical condition into consideration when he is ordering tests. He will know by your age and medical history what he should be testing for. If you are a heavy drinker, or smoker, or have a poor diet, time to fess up, and tell him/her.
But for an adult, a fasting blood sugar to test for diabetes, cholesterol testing, a blood chemistry, a complete blood count. Posssibly a liver panel, a thyroid test, iron test.
A urinalysis with a test for protein, pH, specific gravity among other things..
If you are medication that requires periodic testing, he will do that. If he suspects alcohol or drug abuse, he can order drug screening. If he sees anything in your physical exam to make him think something is wrong, or you have symptoms of something, he will add testing for those things.

Why do hospitals take four bottles of blood for simple testing, when may be one is enough!
I guess it's hospital's way of stealing blood from patients!
I have been to other countries and they only take one tube or less!

No, the hospital does not steal your blood. All of you blood that is taken gets tested. Some of it is for blood cell, whit and red, count. Some is for plasma and coagulation, and the other is for disease testing.

It may take months to confirm a diagnosis and rule out other causes. Tests are done to look for MS and to rule out other possible causes. Some diagnostic tests used are:
--Blood work - look for Vit B12 deficiency and Lyme disease markers
--MRI scans with intravenous gadolinium - identify and date lesions (plaques) in the brain. Newer lesions show up brighter.
--Evoked potentials - hearing, vision, and motor impulses are tested to see if they move normally or too slow.
--Spinal tap (lumbar puncture) - cerebro-spinal fluid is tested to identify cells that suggest MS. Can also be used to differentiate from Lyme disease.

For a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, at least two separate symptomatic events or changes on MRI and a physical indicator (i.e. change in the central nervous system) must occur.
